Original photos by Author Janet Kovarik with effect by Kimberly Hargis of HodgePodge.shop Delicate Arch is one of the iconic arches at Arches National Park, located in Moab, Utah. Being there was a surreal experience, and one that we never thought we would have again (because, little did we know that we would be back, more than two decades later). It was a scorcher that day in 1983, with temperatures over 100 degrees (but, like in the Desert Southwest, it was a “dry heat”). The trail to Delicate was almost “all rock” and we followed a trail of rock cairns, as well as the well-worn footpath in the rockface. We were wearing our trusty “waffle stomper” hiking boots, which, by today’s standards, were crude leather and inch-thick lug soled lace-ups. There were no clouds, there was no breeze, and there was no shade…until we made it to within sight of Delicate. There, we found a “pothole arch” that was wide enough to cast much-needed shade. I was exhausted, and stopped right there…in the shade…completely done in by the heat, drinking water from my canteen that was so hot I could have brewed a cup of tea with it. My husband trekked on, and scored some amazing photos of Delicate. This is one of them.
